Mumbai, India, 2nd March 2017: Global trade enabler DP World is committed to empowering women in the Ports and Shipping industry across geographies. In the Subcontinent region it is one of the key priorities for the organization. Through progressive companywide initiatives, female headcount within the region has doubled in the last 3 years. DP World has immensely contributed to a paradigm shift in this industry wherein a growing number of women are welcomed and awarded leadership roles within the industry.

DP World believes that a diverse and inclusive environment is vital for success. As a step in this direction, DP World has implemented a global approach to encourage a culture within the organization that recognises these values. Furthermore, the organization continues to identify new and existing opportunities to support women participation in various leadership roles and by equipping them with the right information and skill sets.

The dynamic initiatives that DP World has been undertaking for empowering women have been widely recognised.  This was showcased at the recently held ‘The World Women Leadership Congress & Awards’ where in Ms. Monal Srivastava, Regional Head – Human Capital and Admin, DP World Subcontinent, was felicitated with the Women Super Achiever Award in Human Resources by The World HRD Congress. The World Women Leadership Congress & Awards is a platform created by The World HRD Congress to recognize woman achievers from across the globe. 

Monal, with her resilience, created an environment and a culture ready to accept female staff in the ports and shipping sector. She came up with various innovative solutions of creating a talent pipeline at the entry level, recruiting girls in operational areas like gate staff and engineering and by establishing women Board of Directors to drive the agenda of Diversity. Over time she has achieved a cultural shift in the organization where line managers have started exploring possibilities of hiring female employees. The drive for diversity within the organization circulates from the top management downwards.

Anil Singh, Senior Vice President and Managing Director Subcontinent, DP World Subcontinent, is one of six Global Ambassadors for Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA). He strongly believes in the empowerment of women within the sector, and working with WISTA has brought him together with like-minded individuals and facilitated mentoring and awareness programmes to shed light on the various growth opportunities available to women in this erstwhile male-dominated sector.

Commenting on women empowerment in the sector, Anil Singh said, “There has been an undeniable positive change in the way women participate within the trade and shipping industry. We at DP World are proud of the part we have played in ensuring that anyone who is passionate about the maritime sector, be it a man or a woman, is welcomed and given equal opportunity to learn and succeed. The continued efforts of groups like WISTA greatly aid the process of creating a gender-neutral industry. We also support women in institutions like Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping and other training establishments.”

DP World understands that working in a sustainable and responsible way is essential to building a strong business for their customers, their people and society. To do so, the organization continues to invest in its people by embracing diversity, encouraging personal development and providing them with the tools to drive change for gender equality.
