April 5th marks the National Maritime Day of India.  On this day in 1919, Navigation History was created when SS Loyalty, the first Indian flagship, sailed from Mumbai to United Kingdom.  The National Maritime Day was first celebrated on 05th April 1964.  National Maritime Day Celebration Committee at New Mangalore Port conducted various events from 30th March to 05th April 2017.  A seminar on theme topic “CONNECTING INDIA THROUGH SHIPPING” was conducted by New Mangalore Port along with MMD, Mangalore on 01st April 2017.  NMDCC conducted mini-marathon, tennis ball cricket tournament, drawing competition in school, Car Treasure Hunt and Tug of war as parts of celebrations.  In addition, NMDCC organized Blood Donation camp at NMPT hospital, Oil Spill Mock Drill with all Stake holders; arranged for Port visit for school students and ship visit for Marine College Students.  A talk on theme topic was broadcasted in All India Radio at 07.45 PM on 05th April 2017.  With a view to giving limelight to the above programme, banners were displayed at various conspicuous locations.     

On the eve of the 54th National Maritime Day Celebration, a wreath-laying ceremony was performed by the Chairman of NMPT along with other officers and Port Users at 09.00 AM  on 05.04.2017 at Seamen’s Memorial to pay tributes to the unsung seafarers who laid their lives at sea.

Sri. Deepak Shetty, IRS(Retd), former Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India, was the Chief Guest and Sri. P. C. Parida, Chairman, NMPT, presided over the valedictory function held at NMPT Auditorium at 03.30PM on 05th April 2017.
