Dear friends of the environment and the Oceans,

As you very well know Mumbai has been put at the center of the world environmental drive to fight marine debris and plastic pollution. This is due to the hard working Mumbai lawyer and environmental/ocean activist Afroz Shah and his Versova Residence Volunteers plus the 1000s of weekend volunteers from all walks of life. Afroz Shah has, as the only Indian, received the United Nations highest environmental award "Champion of the Earth 2016" for his and the VRVs work. The beach campaign is the world largest one and seen by the UN as model for people's involvement in caring
for nature.  Cf. attachment for list of regular participants in the beach cleaning.

Every year United Nations Environment (UNEP) selects a country for hosting the World Environment Day. This year India is hosting the World Environment Day along with UNEP. Versova Beach has been selected by UNEP, Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra to be the starting point for launching the celebration of the World Environment Day.
