Late MRS. ARATI BHARATRAJ BARVE. ADVOCATE HIGH COURT (17.11.1949 TO 2.1.2019)  was like a lighthouse, which guides home a ship coming from the rough seas in dark stormy weather. A woman with strength of steel that offered support to those who really needed it.

Mrs. ARATI B. BARVE passed away on 2.1.2019. She was 69.  As a lady in shipping law she was a pioneer in Marine Cargo Recoveries. She had an illustrious career for more than three decades.

A former Bank Official with degrees in Sanskrit, Marathi and German, she did law whilst managing home and her little daughter. She got in to shipping law by chance and thereafter became an anchor in her husband’s business of marine cargo recoveries. She had an independent practice which involved filing suits and handling tough negotiations for cargo recoveries with Carriers and P & I Clubs. But that did not stop her from helping several clients in different streams of law specially those who could not pay fees by taking up pro bono cases and giving free advice to one and all. She practiced on the Original Side of the Hon’ble High Court, Bombay as well as in Motor Accident Claims Tribunal taking up accident claims. She was involved in Hon’ble State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission doing claims as diverse as fire claims and medical negligence cases. She was also founder member of Consumer Courts BAR Association.

Her failing health and being bed ridden for last several years did not stop her from being involved in the home and business front, and continuing to do charity for the under privileged. She would often help out her daughter, Bhakti Barve who is also a Maritime lawyer.

A brave woman who remained positive and active till the very end, the industry has lost the guiding star!
